Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has been elected as the next Chief Minister of the state. The decision was taken unanimously at the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who resigned from the post on May 28, proposed Shivakumar’s name for the top post, and the proposal was approved by all legislators present at the meeting.
According to Congress leader Chandrashekhar, the swearing-in ceremony will take place on June 3 at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru. Sources indicate that the new government will also witness a major cabinet reshuffle, with around 10 ministers likely to be dropped. The changes may include leaders close to Siddaramaiah as well as the son of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Shivakumar is set to become Karnataka’s 24th Chief Minister under the Congress party’s reported rotational chief minister formula. Siddaramaiah served as Chief Minister from May 20, 2023, to May 28, 2026.
Senior Congress leaders and observers Randeep Singh Surjewala and K.C. Venugopal were present at the CLP meeting to oversee the leadership selection process. Sources also suggest that the new government may appoint up to four Deputy Chief Ministers as part of a broader power-sharing arrangement within the party.
