Indian households will have to pay more for cooking gas after the government increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹29. Following the latest revision, the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder has risen from ₹913 to ₹942, marking the second hike in the last three months.
The increase is expected to put additional pressure on household budgets, particularly at a time when families are already facing higher living costs. The latest revision follows an earlier hike in March, taking the cumulative increase in domestic LPG prices over the past three months to ₹89 per cylinder.
Defending the move, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the price revision was necessitated by rising global energy costs and supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia. India imports around 60% of its LPG requirement, with a significant portion sourced from the region.
The government also maintained that despite the latest increase, cooking gas prices in India remain among the lowest in the world. Officials said the revised domestic LPG rate is still substantially below international market prices, and oil marketing companies continue to incur losses on household LPG supplies.
