Police in Punjab’s Jalalabad have recovered nearly 11 kilograms of heroin worth around Rs 50 crore from across the fencing near the India-Pakistan border, officials said on Monday.
Addressing a press conference, SSP Gagan Ajit Singh said a farmer who had gone to cultivate land beyond the border fencing alerted the police and the BSF after spotting a suspicious object in the fields.
Following the information, a joint team of Punjab Police and the Border Security Force reached the spot and recovered 20 packets containing 10.950 kilograms of heroin.
The SSP said the recovery was made from agricultural land located across the border fencing. He also announced that the farmer who informed authorities about the suspicious consignment would be honoured for his alertness and cooperation.
Police have launched an investigation to determine how the heroin consignment entered India from Pakistan and who was supposed to receive it. Technical teams are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and gathering intelligence inputs.
The SSP added that with municipal council elections underway, such activities during the poll period cannot be ruled out.
