The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. Khalid will be released from jail for three days, from June 1 to June 3, 2026, to attend to his mother’s surgery.
A bench comprising Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Madhu Jain allowed the interim relief with several conditions. Khalid, who is booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the Delhi riots case, had sought 15 days of interim bail.
In his plea, Khalid stated that he wanted to attend the chehlum (40th-day ritual) of his late uncle and also remain with his mother before and after her surgery scheduled for June 2. However, the court granted him permission for only three days.
Earlier, the trial court had dismissed his plea on May 19, after which Khalid challenged the decision before the High Court. Senior Advocate Trideep Pais, appearing for Khalid, argued that he had previously been granted interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding.
Opposing the plea, counsel for Delhi Police argued that the surgery was minor and Khalid’s sisters were available to take care of their mother.
The High Court imposed strict conditions on the interim bail, directing Khalid to remain within the Delhi-NCR region and stay at the address provided to authorities. He has been permitted to visit only the hospital and must use only one mobile phone number during the bail period.
