Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has extended his support to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.
In a post on X, Kejriwal said that the CJP-led protest had been continuing for several days and that Wangchuk was observing a hunger strike. He stated that the AAP supports the protesters' demands and reiterated that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should resign immediately. Kejriwal also appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast, announcing that he would visit Jantar Mantar on the evening of July 16 to express solidarity.
Meanwhile, the matter has reached the Delhi High Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). Wangchuk has reportedly been on an indefinite fast since July 28, prompting concerns over his deteriorating health.
Delhi High Court has issued notices to both the Central and Delhi governments, directing them to file their responses by Thursday. The case is being heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
The PIL was filed by social activist and advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, seeking immediate medical intervention for Wangchuk. The petition urges the court to direct the authorities to admit him to a hospital without delay and, if necessary, administer force-feeding to protect his life. It also seeks directions to the Centre and the Delhi government to take all necessary steps to prevent any threat to Wangchuk’s health during the ongoing hunger strike.
