NYT report sparks buzz, but government says call followed strict diplomatic protocol

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has rejected reports claiming that a third individual, including entrepreneur Elon Musk, was part of the recent phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

Responding to the reports, an MEA spokesperson said, “We have taken note of this report,” and clarified that the March 24 conversation was strictly between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, with no third party involved.

The clarification comes after a report by The New York Times suggested that Elon Musk was present during the call, citing two US officials. The report, however, did not confirm whether Musk actively participated in the discussion or was merely listening.

Dismissing such claims, the MEA emphasized that the conversation was conducted as per established diplomatic protocols, which typically do not allow the presence of private individuals in high-level discussions between national leaders—especially on sensitive international matters.

During the call, both leaders discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of restoring peace and reducing tensions in the region. They also agreed on the need to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains secure and open.

With this clarification, the government has effectively ruled out any involvement of Elon Musk in the Modi–Trump conversation.
