At least three people were killed and several others injured after a Pakistani airstrike targeted Afghanistan's northeastern Kunar province, according to a provincial official cited by Tolo News on Monday.
The strike is believed to have been carried out in response to a recent suicide bombing at a police station complex in northwestern Pakistan. The incident has raised concerns that tensions between the neighbouring countries could once again escalate into open conflict.
Pakistan and Afghanistan witnessed one of their most serious military confrontations in recent years earlier this year, with clashes reported in February. The latest developments come just days after the Taliban warned that it would defend Afghan territory against any Pakistani military action.
Despite warning of a possible military response, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Kabul remains willing to engage in dialogue with Islamabad. He emphasized the need for improved intelligence-sharing mechanisms and greater bilateral cooperation to address security concerns along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
The fresh airstrike has further strained already fragile relations between the two countries, with regional observers closely monitoring the situation for signs of further escalation.
