Punjab is set to announce the schedule for the upcoming Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections today (May 11). Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri has called a press conference regarding the matter. The briefing will take place at 3:30 PM at Punjab Bhawan, where detailed information about the elections will be shared with the media.

Polls to Be Held in 9 Municipal Corporations, 102 Municipal Councils
Elections are scheduled to take place in nine Municipal Corporations and 102 Municipal Councils across Punjab. The administration has already completed all major preparations, including ward delimitation. Political parties have also intensified their campaign preparations and deployed observers in various regions.
Administration Deploys Officials Across Regions
Candidates aspiring to contest from different political parties have started putting up banners and posters in their respective areas. Keeping the elections in view, the administration has also assigned officials at multiple locations to oversee arrangements and maintain law and order.
Seen as Semi-Final Before 2027 Assembly Elections
The urban local body elections are being viewed as a crucial political test ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Since these polls are focused on urban regions, political analysts believe they could offer early indications of the public mood. Traditionally, the ruling party tends to gain an advantage in local body elections, although this time the polls are being held in the final phase of the government’s tenure.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has appeared confident ahead of the elections and has reportedly held programs in all major election-bound areas over the past two months. Historically, the ruling party has managed to perform strongly in most previous local body elections.
Local Bodies Minister in ED Custody
The elections are being announced at a politically sensitive time, as Punjab’s Local Bodies Minister was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) two days ago in a money laundering case. So far, no additional charge of the department has been handed over to another minister or officer. Attention is now focused on whom the government appoints to manage the department during the election period.
