RCB head coach Malolan Rangarajan reveals captain played the WPL 2026 final with a 103-degree fever, calls her effort a true mark of leadership
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic triumph in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 final became even more special after head coach Malolan Rangarajan revealed that captain Smriti Mandhana battled illness on the eve of the title clash. Despite suffering from a high 103-degree fever a day before the final against Delhi Capitals at the Kotambi Stadium, Mandhana produced a match-winning performance to guide RCB to their second WPL crown.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Rangarajan praised Mandhana’s courage and commitment, calling her knock a reflection of her exceptional character. He disclosed that the RCB skipper did everything possible behind the scenes to make herself available for the final, showing no signs of discomfort on the field.
“For people who didn’t know, Smriti was at 103 degrees last evening. She did whatever she could to be fully fit for the final. To turn up for a game like that, without any complaints, shows incredible character,” Rangarajan said, lauding her leadership and fighting spirit.
Mandhana led from the front with a breathtaking 87 off just 41 balls, anchoring RCB’s memorable chase of a challenging 204-run target. Her innings was marked by fearless stroke play and calm decision-making under pressure. She also stitched together a crucial 165-run partnership that laid the foundation for RCB’s successful run chase and sealed the championship in style.
The RCB coach also credited the team’s collective effort throughout the season, stressing that the title win was the result of consistent performances from multiple players at different stages of the tournament. According to him, the depth in the squad and strong preparation allowed several match-winners to step up when it mattered the most.
Special praise was reserved for Georgia Voll, who impressed with her composure on the big stage. Voll scored a vital 79 off 54 balls in the final, and Rangarajan highlighted the hard work she had put in away from the spotlight to deliver when the pressure was at its peak.
With the title win, RCB will now wear two stars on their jersey. However, Rangarajan made it clear that the team’s hunger for success remains strong. He concluded by saying that while winning the WPL is a massive achievement, the focus will now shift to chasing a third title in the coming season.
