In a major move amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and rising energy concerns, the Supreme Court of India has decided that all vacation benches functioning during the summer break will conduct proceedings entirely through video conferencing.
According to a circular issued by the apex court, hearings for fresh matters scheduled on Mondays and Fridays, or on any other notified dates, will also take place through virtual mode. The decision has been implemented with immediate effect following the Centre’s Office Memorandum issued on May 12, 2026.
The circular further stated that, as part of fuel-saving measures, judges of the Supreme Court have agreed to encourage carpooling. In addition, up to 50 percent of employees across various registry departments will be allowed to work from home for two days a week.
The decision was taken during a full court meeting held on Friday morning under the leadership of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The move comes in view of rising crude oil prices and concerns surrounding India’s energy security.
