A woman allegedly set herself on fire outside the Baltana police post in Zirakpur on Tuesday, reportedly distressed over police inaction after she spent several days trying to file a rape complaint.
The severely burned woman was initially admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32. Due to her critical condition, she was later referred to PGI Chandigarh. Reports indicate she has suffered around 70% burn injuries and remains in serious condition.
According to the victim’s family, she had been visiting the police post for several days, but an FIR was not registered regarding her rape complaint. On Tuesday, she arrived at the police post with her brother. The family alleges that instead of hearing them out, police personnel scolded them and asked them to leave.
Shortly afterward, in a state of distress, the woman allegedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze outside the police post. Bystanders rushed to her aid and immediately took her to the hospital.
The victim’s brother stated that his sister was sexually assaulted by a man, but despite repeated complaints, the police delayed taking action. He further alleged that on Tuesday, police claimed the accused had been called in but did not show up. When they insisted on registering an FIR, they were reportedly turned away.
Meanwhile, the police have stated that an FIR has now been registered based on the woman’s complaint, and the investigation has been handed over to an SP-rank officer. Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said a thorough probe will also be conducted into the attempted self-immolation, and conclusions will be drawn after examining all facts.
Taking serious note of the incident, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal has ordered a comprehensive inquiry. She has directed the SSP to ensure a fair investigation and stated that strict action will be taken if any negligence by police personnel is found.
