First Indian in Men’s Singles Final After 60 Years
Punjab Newsline,Sports:
Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty has created history by reaching the final of the Asian Badminton Championships. The 20-year-old shuttler has brought pride to the nation with his remarkable performance in the men’s singles category. Notably, this is the first time in 60 years that an Indian player has reached the final of this prestigious tournament. Before him, Dinesh Khanna had won the gold medal in 1965, and now Ayush has revived hopes of another historic achievement.
In the semifinal held in Zhejiang, China, Ayush displayed tremendous resilience and confidence. He defeated top seed and defending champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in a thrilling three-game contest. Ranked World No. 25, Ayush lost the first game 10-21 but made a strong comeback to win the next two games 21-19 and 21-17. With this victory, he knocked out the Paris Olympic bronze medallist and 2023 World Champion from the tournament.
This win is being seen as a significant moment for Indian badminton. Ayush not only impressed everyone with his performance but also proved that India has strong potential in men’s singles at the highest level. Earlier in 2023, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had created history by winning the doubles title, but such a feat in men’s singles has come after a long gap.
Now, all eyes are on the final, where Ayush has a golden opportunity to create another milestone. If he maintains his current form, India could witness a historic title win, and Ayush Shetty may emerge as the new star of Indian badminton.
