Bharatiya Janata Party Punjab President Sunil Jakhar has urged the state government to announce the implementation of a crop insurance scheme for farmers during the special assembly session scheduled on April 13. He has also written a letter to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann regarding this matter.
Jakhar stated that while the Government of India has introduced a nationwide crop insurance scheme, the Punjab government has failed to implement it in the state, calling it a “major betrayal” of farmers.
He highlighted that farmers in Punjab are currently facing severe challenges due to natural disasters. Unseasonal rains and hailstorms have caused widespread crop damage. Additionally, floods in 2023 and 2025 led to massive destruction, and many farmers are still awaiting compensation, largely because no crop insurance scheme is in place in Punjab. Farmers continue to remain anxious about how their losses will be recovered.
Jakhar also reminded the Chief Minister that three years ago, it was announced that the state would introduce its own agricultural insurance scheme in place of the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. However, despite the passage of time and losses worth thousands of crores, the scheme has yet to be implemented.
He emphasized that with the special Assembly session scheduled for April 13, 2026, the Chief Minister should fulfill his promise and announce Punjab’s own crop insurance scheme without further delay, ensuring that farmers are compensated during times of natural calamities.
