Great and encouraging news has emerged for the farmers of Himachal Pradesh. The state government has launched a historic initiative to make farming in the state more modern, accessible, and profitable. Under the 'Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization' (SMAM) scheme, the Department of Agriculture has decided to reopen its Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) portal agrimachinery.nic.in starting September 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM. Through this scheme, farmers working in hilly terrains will get a direct subsidy of up to 50 percent on the purchase of modern agricultural equipment.
Under this special campaign, priority will be given to small and marginal farmers, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and women farmers. Farmers can avail government support for power tillers, power weeders, brush cutters, and various newly developed tech-enabled machinery according to their needs. The deadline to apply on the subsidy portal is September 30, 2026. As a result, farmers across the state will have a limited 9-day window to take advantage of this ambitious scheme, generating immense enthusiasm in local agricultural markets.
To keep the selection process fair and transparent, the department has opted for a digital lottery system. After reviewing all applications received by September 30, an online lottery will be conducted on October 1, 2026, through which the names of lucky beneficiaries will be announced. The Agriculture Department has urged state farmers to purchase machinery only from firms registered with the Government of India and approved models to ensure their subsidy claims are approved without hassle.
This move is set to be a game-changer in addressing the challenges faced by farmers due to difficult mountainous terrain and labor shortages. The state government believes that using modern machinery will not only save farmers hard labor and time but also significantly increase crop yield. With this technical transition in agriculture, Himachal Pradesh's farmers will take a strong step toward self-reliance.
