A 32-year-old woman and her nearly two-year-old daughter died after sustaining severe burn injuries under suspicious circumstances in Shakkar Mandori village of Haryana’s Nathusari Chopta police station area. The deceased have been identified as Kavita and her daughter Sanvi. While Kavita succumbed to her injuries during treatment, Sanvi also died later despite medical efforts.
The case has taken a serious turn after Kavita’s brother refused to accept the incident as an accident and alleged that his sister had been subjected to dowry-related harassment since her marriage. Acting on his complaint, police have registered a case against five members of the woman’s in-laws’ family, including her husband, and started an investigation.
According to the complaint filed with police, Kavita was married to Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Shakkar Mandori village, on March 3, 2022. The couple had a daughter, Sanvi, who was around two years old. Kavita’s brother alleged that she had been harassed by her in-laws for dowry ever since the marriage. Several meetings between the two families were reportedly held in the past, and village panchayats had also attempted to resolve the dispute.
The complainant stated that on September 14, Sandeep had taken Kavita back to her matrimonial home from her parental house. On September 20, at around 1:35 pm, Kavita spoke to her brother over the phone. Shortly afterward, the family received information that she had suffered burn injuries.
When relatives reached the spot, they found Kavita critically burned, while her daughter Sanvi had also sustained serious burn injuries. Both were rushed to a hospital for treatment, but doctors could not save them due to the severity of their condition.
In his complaint, the victim’s brother named Kavita’s husband Sandeep Kumar, mother-in-law Shanti Devi, father-in-law Om Prakash, sister-in-law, and another woman, alleging their involvement in the harassment and raising suspicion over the circumstances leading to the deaths. He has demanded a thorough investigation, asserting that the deaths of his sister and niece cannot be treated as a routine incident.
Police said a case has been registered based on the complaint and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths.
