At least nine people, including a four-year-old child, were killed after a massive fire broke out in a five-storey building in central Kolkata early Wednesday. Six others were injured in the incident.
The fire broke out at around 1:45 am at the building located on Mirza Ghalib Street, where several hotels were reportedly operating. Soon after receiving the information, five fire engines reached the spot, while police and disaster management teams launched rescue and relief operations.
Officials said around 80 people were safely evacuated from the building during the operation.
West Bengal Fire Services Minister Kaushik Chowdhury, who visited the site, said the identities of the deceased were yet to be established. He said the victims included both Indian and Bangladeshi nationals.
Minister said the condition of the building was extremely poor and several hotels were being run from the premises. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, although the exact cause will be determined after a forensic examination.
Chowdhury also alleged that the building management had failed to comply with essential safety and construction norms. Several irregularities related to the operation of the hotels have also come to light, officials said.
A detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and establish responsibility for the lapses.
