The Punjab Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a proposal to increase the minimum wage by 15% after a gap of 13 years, marking a significant move for workers across the state. The decision was taken on the occasion of International Workers' Day.

The hike will benefit all registered workers in both government and private sectors. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the decision as a mark of respect for the contribution of the working class.

He noted that the base rate of minimum wages was last revised in 2012. While dearness allowance has been increased periodically since then, the base wage had remained unchanged until now.

The Chief Minister also announced that following the implementation of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act 2026, he will begin a ‘Shukrana Yatra’ from May 6 to May 9. The journey will start from Anandpur Sahib and cover major Sikh religious sites including Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Akal Takht, Damdama Sahib, Mastuana Sahib, Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib, and Fatehgarh Sahib, where prayers will be offered.
