Counter Intelligence unit has busted a cross-border smuggling module allegedly involved in the trafficking of drugs and illegal weapons and arrested four accused persons in Amritsar.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused were allegedly in contact with smugglers operating across the border and were involved in receiving and further supplying consignments of narcotics on their instructions.
The operation led to the recovery of 27 kg of heroin, a foreign-made .30 bore PX5 pistol, and three cartridges from the accused.
Investigators have also found alleged links between the module and a Dubai-based operator. Police said the accused were reportedly coordinating with the Dubai-based handler as well as cross-border smugglers to facilitate the movement and distribution of the drug consignments.
Following the operation, an FIR was registered at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
The Counter Intelligence team is now questioning the arrested accused to establish the wider network. Investigators are trying to determine the source of the 27-kg heroin consignment and identify those to whom it was allegedly intended to be delivered.
The agency is also examining the backward and forward linkages of the accused to identify other individuals involved in the alleged smuggling network.
