Chandigarh administration has stopped businessman Rakesh Trehan’s proposed ‘iPhone Langar’, scheduled for September 22, in which he had announced plans to distribute free iPhones to women from Chandigarh and Mohali.
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav has directed the police not to allow the event to take place. Chandigarh Police has also clarified that no permission has been sought or granted for the proposed program.
The Mohali Police has taken a similar position. SSP Varun Sharma said that no such event would be allowed in Mohali without permission from the Deputy Commissioner. He added that legal action would be taken if anyone conducts the event without the required permission.
Trehan, meanwhile, has said that the program will not involve gathering people at a single location. He said the winner will be selected through a draw conducted in front of the media and that he will personally visit the winner’s home to hand over the iPhone.
