A 19-year-old man, identified as Harpreet Singh, allegedly died after being brutally assaulted in Saidpur Khurd village, a border-area village in Amritsar district. The incident is suspected to have stemmed from personal rivalry and suspicion.
Police have registered a case against five people based on a complaint filed by Harpreet’s father, Kashmir Singh. Raids are being conducted to trace and arrest the accused.
According to Kashmir Singh, Harpreet was sleeping at home when members of a neighbouring family allegedly forcibly took him to the terrace and assaulted him. The family suspects that the accused believed Harpreet was involved in a relationship with a girl from their family through his friendship with another young man. The family has alleged that the assault was carried out due to this suspicion and rivalry.
Kashmir Singh further alleged that after the family managed to bring Harpreet back home, the accused placed cots outside their house and blocked the way. He claimed that whenever the family tried to take Harpreet to a hospital, the accused allegedly arrived at their house carrying sickles, preventing them from getting medical treatment.
Harpreet eventually died from his injuries after he could not receive timely medical attention, according to the family.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Narinder Singh said a case had been registered against five accused based on Kashmir Singh’s statement. Police said Harpreet was allegedly assaulted on the night of September 19 and died the following day due to his injuries.
Police teams are conducting raids at suspected locations to arrest the accused. Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway.
