An elderly couple from Haryana’s Hisar district was found dead in a neighbour’s agricultural field on Thursday morning. The bodies were discovered lying close together, with their hands clasped in each other’s hands, prompting shock among residents of Asrawa village.
According to police, a farmer who reached the field early in the morning noticed the bodies and raised an alarm. A large number of villagers gathered at the spot before police arrived and cordoned off the area for investigation.
The deceased were identified as Atma Ram, son of Santalal, and his wife Baskori Devi, residents of Asrawa village. After the identification, police informed their family members.
Son says parents had been missing since night
The couple’s son, Pradeep Kumar, told police that his parents had been missing since the previous evening. During the search, family members found a six-page suicide note in their room, reportedly bearing the signatures of both Atma Ram and Baskori Devi.
In the note, the couple allegedly stated that they were ending their lives due to prolonged illness and unbearable pain.
Pradeep, who works as an electrician and also runs a tent house business in the village, said his father was at the shop until around 5 pm on August 12. Later, he went to the family’s farmhouse (dhani), where Baskori Devi was staying, while Pradeep remained at the shop for the night.
The next morning, at around 6:30 am on August 13, Pradeep’s uncle Mukesh informed him that his parents were not present at the farmhouse. The family then began searching for them and discovered the note in their room.
Couple had been suffering from spinal problems
According to the son, Baskori Devi had undergone spinal surgery about a year ago at Sarvesh Hospital in Hisar and had been under mental distress since then. Atma Ram was also reportedly suffering from severe spinal pain for several days.
Pradeep told police that his father had been deeply troubled by both his own physical pain and his wife’s prolonged illness. The suicide note reportedly referred to this unbearable suffering as the reason behind their decision.
Police have taken the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway.
