Two young Kanwariyas were killed in a tragic road accident late Thursday night during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra on the Radaur–Kurukshetra road near Ghodag village in Yamunanagar district.
According to police, the victims were returning to their village after collecting holy Ganga water from Haridwar for offering at their local Shiva temple when a speeding unidentified truck allegedly rammed into them from behind and fled the scene.
Deceased have been identified as Sachin (21) and Ajay Kumar alias Kala (21), both residents of Morpatti Mohalla in Narwana, Jind district.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident and shifted the victims to the Civil Hospital in Yamunanagar, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Family members said both youths had undertaken the Kanwar pilgrimage for the first time. Sachin had been married only in April this year and was the only brother of his two sisters. Ajay was the younger of two brothers and worked in agriculture.
In a complaint lodged with Yamunanagar Sadar Police Station, Vikram Kumar, a resident of Morpatti Mohalla, said he had travelled to Haridwar on August 3 along with his cousin Sachin, Ajay Kumar, Ashish Kumar from nearby Lona village, and other devotees to bring back the sacred water.
Vikram stated that around 11 pm, when their group reached the Radaur–Kurukshetra road near Ghodag village, a truck coming from the Yamunanagar side at high speed struck Sachin and Ajay from behind.
The impact was so severe that both youths fell onto the road and were crushed under the vehicle. Vikram said he narrowly escaped by jumping to the roadside moments before the collision.
Police Launch Search for Driver
Soon after the accident, Vikram alerted emergency services through Dial-112. Police and ambulance teams reached the spot and shifted the injured youths to the hospital, but doctors could not save them.
A case has been registered against the unidentified truck driver, and police have launched an investigation to trace the vehicle and arrest the accused.
