No Power Cuts in Punjab from May 1, Assures Minister Sanjeev Arora

Punjab Newsline | Chandigarh

Punjab Power Minister Sanjeev Arora Sanjeev Arora has assured that the state will not face power cuts from May 1, despite the recent electricity crisis.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, the minister said that Punjab has been experiencing an unexpected power shortage since April 18. He admitted that such a situation was not anticipated, adding that the entire country especially North India is currently facing a similar issue.

Arora explained that power shortages are usually expected during May and June, and the government typically makes full arrangements in advance. However, this year, the demand surged earlier due to a sudden rise in temperatures, leading to electricity shortages.

He noted that power-related issues are mainly occurring after 6 PM. “We arrange electricity from multiple sources, but due to the sudden increase in heat after April 18, we have had to face power cuts,” he said.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Arora stated that the promise of free electricity will be fulfilled. He also added that the situation has improved since last night, bringing some relief to consumers.

According to the department, work is underway to strengthen the transmission and distribution system in the state at a cost of around ₹6,000 crore. However, the sudden spike in electricity demand has also affected the pace of this work. Despite this, officials say the situation is being closely monitored.

As a relief measure, industries have been allowed to purchase electricity directly during nighttime under open access provisions. This step aims to reduce the load on the grid during the day and ensure uninterrupted supply for regular consumers.

Avoid Unnecessary Use of Electrical Appliances

The department claims that electricity is being supplied as per demand and the state remains self-sufficient in power. A senior official said that while preparations were already in place, the unusually high demand in April was unexpected.

Consumers have also been urged to avoid using unnecessary electrical appliances during peak hours to help ensure smooth power supply for everyone.
