Punjab is witnessing widespread power cuts, driven not only by routine maintenance but also by a growing gap between electricity demand and generation. The increasing shortage has led to frequent feeder tripping and instability in the supply system across multiple districts.
According to reports, Punjab’s peak electricity demand has now crossed 12,130 MW. However, the state is facing a significant supply deficit. Around 7,000 MW is being drawn from the central power pool, Local generation in Punjab stands at only about 5,100 MW. Despite this combined supply, the demand is still not being fully met, causing repeated disruptions in electricity distribution.
The situation has further worsened as technical staff of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is on a work-to-rule strike, affecting maintenance and operational efficiency of the power network.
