A speeding truck allegedly ran over around 10 cows sitting by the roadside on Sector-18 Old Road in Faridabad on Wednesday night, killing six animals on the spot and leaving four seriously injured.
The tragic scene triggered outrage among local residents, who gathered at the accident site after seeing the injured cows writhing in pain. In a fit of anger, some people set the truck on fire. Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
According to eyewitnesses, the cows were sitting along one side of the road when the truck, reportedly moving at high speed, climbed onto them. The collision caused panic in the area, and cries for help were heard as several cows lay injured on the road.
Local residents and members of cow protection groups soon reached the spot. Gopal Sharma, a member of a local Goraksha Dal, said they received information from residents about the incident. When the team arrived, six cows had already died, while four others were in critical condition.
Injured animals were shifted to nearby gaushalas for treatment with the help of local volunteers. The carcasses of the deceased cows have been sent to a veterinary hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police said the truck driver was caught by local people and later handed over to the authorities. A case has been registered, and further investigation into the accident is underway.
