A historic moment was recorded in the Rajya Sabha on Friday as, for the first time, a nominated Member of Parliament was entrusted with the responsibility of Deputy Chairman. The position has been given to Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was recently nominated to the Upper House by President Droupadi Murmu.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harivansh on being elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the third time. In his message, the Prime Minister referenced prominent leaders from Jayaprakash Narayan to Chandra Shekhar.
Highlighting Harivansh’s background, PM Modi noted that he was born in the village of Jayaprakash Narayan, a widely respected leader from Bihar known for his strong opposition to the Emergency imposed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He also mentioned Chandra Shekhar while recalling Harivansh’s journey as a writer.
The Prime Minister added that Harivansh’s unanimous election for a third term on his birth anniversary makes the occasion even more special.
