Twenty people were killed and several passengers were critically injured after a passenger bus plunged into a gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Udhampur district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed their condolences. The Prime Minister has announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

According to officials, the incident took place on Monday morning near Kagot village in the Ramnagar area when a passenger bus lost control on a hilly road and plunged into a deep gorge. The bus was on its way from a remote village to Udhampur when the driver reportedly lost control at a sharp bend, causing the vehicle to roll down into the ravine. Several passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some remain in critical condition.

Rescue Operations Launched Immediately

Soon after the accident, rescue and relief operations were initiated at the site. Teams from the local administration and police, along with residents, worked together to evacuate the injured and shift them to medical facilities.

Probe Underway, Area in Mourning

Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, a pall of grief has descended over the region, with authorities closely monitoring the situation.
